曾子曰：“吾日三省乎吾身。为人谋而不忠乎？与朋友交而不信乎？传不习乎？”
曾子（公元前505－公元前435 年)是孔子的弟子，姓曾，名参(shēn)，字子舆，春秋末年生于鲁国东鲁（今山东临沂平邑县），后移居鲁国武城（今山东济宁嘉祥县）。十六岁拜孔子为师，颇得孔子真传。终其一生，曾子都在努力传授、传播和传扬儒家思想，并将孔子的言行整理成《论语》。曾子是儒家正统思想的忠实传人，被后世尊为“宗圣”。鲁悼公三十二年（公元前435 年），曾子辞世，终年70 岁。
曾子的“三省吾身”之说，在中国两千多年的历史中，犹如孔子的英名一样，家喻户晓，传扬天下，成为良知良愿者的座右铭。“三省吾身”中的“省”是检查、反省、内省的意思。“三省”的“三”，表示多次，并不只是三次。其后所言之三事，只是举例而言罢了。“为人谋而不忠乎”，即为别人办事的时候是否尽心尽力了；“与朋友交不信乎”，即同朋友交往时是否诚实可靠；“传不习乎”，即老师传授给我的知识是否温习和练习了。
对“传不习乎”，还有另外的解读，即传授给别人的知识和学业自己是否实践了，也就是说要求别人做的自己是否已经做到了。这实际上涉及到曾子说这句话的时间问题，即究竟是在跟随孔子学习时说的还是孔子去世之后他自己传授孔子思想时说的。由于《论语》对此并无记载，且去今久远，如今已很难对此做出客观准确的考据了。但根据曾子一生的追求及其传世的事业来看，这样的解读似乎更加符合实际一些。
Arthur Waley 将其译为：
Master Tseng said, Every day I examine myself on these three points: in acting on behalf of others, have I always been loyal to their interests? In intercourse with my friends, have I always been true to my word? Have I failed to repeat the precepts that have been handed down to me?
辜鸿铭将其译为：
A disciple of Confucius remarked, “I daily examine into my personal conduct on three points: — Firstly, whether in carrying out the duties entrusted to me by others, I have not failed in conscientiousness; Secondly, whether in intercourse with friends, I have not failed in sincerity and trustworthiness; Thirdly, whether I have not failed to practice what I profess in my teaching.”
丘氏昆仲将其译为：
Zeng Zi said, “I daily examine my personal conduct on three points: in planning for other people, whether or not I have been loyal; in relationships with friends, whether or not I have been trustworthy; and whether or not I have practiced what I preached.”
以上三则译文，对“三省乎吾身”、“为人谋而不忠乎”、“与朋友交不信乎”的理解和翻译，还是比较一致的，尽管在用词和句式上有所不同。尤其对“三省吾身”中的“三”的理解和翻译，可以说是完全一致的。特别是辜氏，不仅使用了“three points”来翻译“三”，而且还使用了firstly, secondly, thirdly 来强调“三”。
但对于“传不习乎”的理解和翻译，三则译文则有了明显的差异。Arthur Walye 将其译作Have I failed to repeat the precepts ([ˈpri:sept]戒律、戒规) that have been handed down to me？即将其理解为是否复习了老师传授给自己的知识。而辜氏则将其译作Thirdly, whether I have not failed to practice what I profess in my teaching. 丘氏昆仲则将其译作whether or not I have practiced what I preached. 从辜氏和丘氏昆仲的翻译来看，基本上都将“传不习乎”理解为传授给别人的知识和学业自己是否践行了，或要求别人做的自己是否已经做到了。
从历史传承的角度和自圆其说的角度来看，两种理解和翻译都是合乎情理的，都在一定意义上传递了“宗圣”的为学、为人、为事的风格和精神。
